In the early days there was an initial staff base of just two and Otara relied heavily on help from her family, including her sister-in-law who was an accountant. Now Odel employs more than 430 people directly and a further 500 indirectly. It hasn’t all been plain sailing though and Otara hasn’t been afraid to learn from her failings. An unsuccessful venture opening a store in Singapore prompted her to study the financial aspects of the business in more detail.

Otara believes that determination and having a point of difference have played a major part in her success so far. “I don’t think I’ll ever stop dreaming and developing new concepts. I’m planning to look at areas for new stores, improve the current stores, and also look into expanding overseas in the near future.” Networking, PR, and marketing have been essential to the business and Otara has been a pioneer in this area within Sri Lanka with the development of her award-winning websites and her use of social media to promote her brands. She also believes that it is imperative for start-ups “to understand the market you are selling to, try to be different, hard-working, and above all enjoy what you do.”
